We The People Demand Beer

There’s been an interesting little story evolving over the past few weeks that I’ve been following, and I wanted to share it with everyone.

Recently, President Obama’s Homebrewing penchant became mainstream through his actions of gifting a bottle of his White House Honey Ale. While his chefs have been whipping up beer on the grounds for years as far as I know, all of a sudden I can’t stop hearing about it. You see, I too brew my own beer, so hearing of this sorta news outside of my traditional home brewing circles is a little new. Until the past few years when the craft beer movement really took off, people looked at home brewers very much like moonshiners; deranged rednecks.

Well, once the Internet home brewing community got ahold of this news, things really started to take off. As is per usual, the folks over at Reddit’s /r/homebrewing and /r/beer went full-tilt forward, clamoring for Obama to release the recipe. It started with the whitehouse.gov petition mentioned above, but some Redditors have even gone so far as to issue Freedom of Information Act Requests for the recipe.

Now, as of last night, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney has seen fit to announce that if the above-linked petition reaches its threshold by the appropriate date, they will in fact release the recipe for White House Honey Ale.

So from me and my fellow home brewers, please, sign the petition. For beer. For America.
