Welcome to Reddit (possibly NSFW; reddit and weed)

For those of you blessed enough to be productive contributing members of society (much unlike myself), you may have never spent a great amount of time on reddit. reddit is a social news aggregation site, where users submit links or text posts for the community to view. Submissions are “upvoted” to show approval, and a comment thread can grow out of posts. Upvotes push submissions up near the top of of the news firehose, and viewing the site ranks posts by popularity (that is to say, upvotes).

reddit organizes itself in to “subreddits”, small communities focused around a single topic. One of the subreddits with the most subscribers that frequently features posts that get voted to the “front page” of the global submission pool is the community known as trees; where “trees” are a slang term for weeeeeeeeeeed. It’s an entire subreddit for stoners, and while the majority of the content posted to trees is in fact about trees, the people have a near legendary reputation for being so overtly friendly that they will upvote anything posted to their subreddit.

It seems, though, that reddit user lightworld may have been a little confused when he posted a picture of his young fig tree he had planted seeking advice with the question, “This is my fig tree. Should I cut off the little limb things growing on the bottom?” The post and comment thread on the trees subreddit are in the source link. lightworld thought he was posting in a subreddit about actual trees. On most Internet communities, this would have been immediately met with an intense amount of ridicule and probably some great jokes at the poster’s expense. Most likely, there would be a “meme” born. But not so on the trees subreddit. Shortly after posting his question, he made a comment in his own thread, stating rather succinctly:

ah, this is the wrong place… what is this?

lightworld

In spite of this, as it stands right now, his post is at the top of the global reddit firehose (known simply as “all”), and it is full of comments from hundreds of stoners offering a platitude of silvicultural advice.

For the record, it would seem that no, lightworld should not go about cutting off the little limb things growing on the bottom, as apparently fig trees are prone to being easily distressed. lightworld should totally remove them, because they are called “suckers”, and there’s something in there the “apical meristem” and, fuck.

Stoners are smart.
