Look at me, linking to reddit like some sort of hooligan.
But it is an interesting question, and what compelled me to link to this was the body of top (at the time of this writing) comment:
FACT: If men don’t get exactly equal leave then it is in the interests of employers to hire men over women.
Don’t believe that just because we have ‘equal opportunities employment laws’ that gender bias doesn’t exist. Employers are not stupid, and generally they are not sexist. But, what they do want is value for money, and women are not good value for money if they have to be paid maternity leave while men don’t.
An interesting idea.
I think it would be nice if fathers got to spend some time around with their kids when they are first born. And I can’t speak for mothers out there, but I’m sure at least a few of them would appreciate the helping hand. But the equality aspect is interesting, too; not that men need the same time off, but that by not giving them time off provides an incentive to favor them over women in employment.
